Aruba is gezegend met zo'n beetje de mooiste stranden ter wereld. De lange
gebogen westkust van Aruba, beter bekend als Palm Beach en Eagle Beach, is het toppunt van
tropische witte zandstranden. Het strand is kilometers lang en biedt alles waarvan
zonaanbidders maar kunnen dromen. Als je hier de extreem vriendelijke houding van de
Arubaan ten opzichte van toeristen aan toevoegd, samen met de vele bars, restaurants,
casino's en andere vormen van uitgaansmogelijkheden, dan begrijp je waarom Aruba zo'n
fantastische plek is om naar op vakantie te gaan. Het credo van Aruba "One Happy
Island" zegt eigenlijk alles!

Aruba's eerste bewoners waren de Caquetios indianen van de Arawak volksstam.
Fragmenten van eerste indiaanse nederzettingen dateren uit 1000 na chr., zo ook de oeroude
geschilderde symbolen op de muren van de grotten bij Fontein, Ayo en andere plaatsen.
Overblijfselen van aardewerk zijn nog te bezichtigen in het Archeologisch Museum.Een paar
eeuwen later, landde de eerste Europeaan op Arubaanse stranden. De Spaanse
ontdekkingsreiziger Alonso de Ojeda heeft het eiland rond 1499 ontdekt. De Spanjaard
exporteerde de indianen naar de Dominicaanse Republiek, waar ze in de kopermijnen moesten
werken.In 1636, toen de Tachtigjarige Oorlog tussen Nederland en Spanje zijn hoogtepunt
naderde, hebben de Nederlanders Aruba veroverd. Zij namen de macht over gedurende bijna 2
eeuwen. In 1805, tijdens de Napoleontische Oorlogen, kregen de Engelsen even de macht over
het eiland, maar het eiland viel terug in Nederlandse handen in 1816. Alhoewel Aruba nog
steeds deel uitmaakt van het Koninkrijk, functioneert het autonoom.

De community is gemaakt naar aanleiding van onze vakantie in Aruba in 2001.
Deze vakantie was een fantastische ervaring voor ons. Aruba is een waar paradijs. Het weer
is geweldig, de stranden zijn de mooiste ter wereld. De Arubaanse bevolking is zeer
gastvrij en bijzonder vriendelijk. Ik wil op deze community ons enthousiasme delen met de

Aruba heeft een tropisch klimaat en het is er altijd zonnig. De gemiddelde
temperatuur is er bijna 28° C. graden en er waait altijd een noordoostpassaat. Het
verschil tussen zomer en winter is gemiddeld slechts 3,6° C. en het verschil tussen dag
en nacht is gemiddeld 5,5° C. De gemiddelde regenval is ongeveer 60 cm per jaar, en de
regen valt meestal in de vorm van korte, hevige plaatselijke buien. De meeste regen valt
in de maanden november, december en januari. De warmste maanden zijn augustus, september
en oktober. Tropische stormen en tornado's komen op Aruba niet voor.

Aruba is het meest westelijk gelegen eiland van de Benedenwindse Eilanden. De
oppervlakte van het eiland is ruim 193 km2. Qua omvang is het te vergelijken met het
eiland Texel. Aruba bestaat uit een kern van oude gesteenten dat zich meer dan honderd
miljoen jaar geleden door o.a. onderzeese uitbarstingen gevormd heeft. Ongeveer zestig
miljoen jaar geleden verscheen dit gesteente boven zeeniveau. Daarna werd het omgeven door
veel jongere afzettingen in de vorm van koraalkalksteen. Het oudste, vulkanische gedeelte
van Aruba bevindt zich dan ook in het midden van het eiland. Hier bevinden zich ook de
hoogste toppen van het eiland, de 189 meter hoge Jamanota en de 188 meter hoge Arikok. De
noordkust is steil en rotsachtig. Door de noordoostpassaat beukt de zee constant met grote
kracht tegen de kust. Het zuidoostelijke deel van het eiland bestaat uit
kalksteenformaties. Aan de westkant is een kilometers lang zandstrand, die tot de mooiste
van de wereld gerekend worden. Hier staan ook bijna alle hotels. In tegenstelling tot de
noordkant is de zee hier kalm en zeer helder.

ArubaStation kan bijna haar 1-jarige bestaan vieren. Met meer dan 1000 leden
is ArubaStation 1 van de grootste Arubaanse communitysites op internet en we groeien nog
dagelijks. Maar ArubaStation is nog steeds een non-profit project dat door vrijwilligers
in stand wordt gehouden en waarvoor de kosten uit eigen zak moeten worden opgebracht.

Antillen. Opgericht in 1884 is de Amigoe het oudste dagblad van de Nederlandse Antillen en

zaterdag. Amigoe.com was de eerste online nieuwssite op Curaçao, geopend in 1995. Met de

Aruba is een eilandnatie in de Caribische Zee op een veertigtal kilometer ten
noorden van het schiereiland Paraguaná van Venezuela. Het behoort tot de ABC-eilanden van
de Kleine Antillen. Aruba heeft een bevolking van circa 100.000 inwoners en een
oppervlakte van circa 190 km2. Het eiland is zeer droog met weinig van de tropische
vegetatie die in de Cariben zo gebruikelijk is. De hoofdstad van Aruba is Oranjestad. Tot
het midden van de jaren 1980 was de belangrijkste industrie van Aruba olieraffinage. Toen
werden de raffinaderijen gesloten en verschoof de economie van het eiland naar toerisme.

Amerikanen. Op 1 januari 1986 scheidde Aruba zich af van de overige Nederlandse Antillen
en werd een autonoom onderdeel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden (status aparte).
